Let’s say you are at a nice restaurant or cocktail bar and the waiter hands over the drink menu to you. You browse through the list with so much confusion not knowing which drink to choose from the list. You are not allowed to have a taste of all of them to decide which one you would love to have. And you can’t figure out how the drink with taste or if it will suit your palate by just looking at the ingredients unless you are a connoisseur of drinks.

You have only two options – choose your drink based on the drink prices or choose based on the alcohol brand. Both options are not always the best especially if you like to drink with class and experience wonderful concoctions. Now that’s where we come in…

For every man who loves to drink with class, here are these Top 10 gentleman’s drinks you should know. Each of them has been selected so you can order any off the list with full confidence that you will be the coolest gentleman at the bar.

Warning: DRINK RESPONSIBLY. We strongly recommend the responsible consumption of wines, alcoholic based cocktails, and spirits. If there is no legal age for consuming alcohol in your country, you must be over 21.

TOP 10 GENTLEMAN’S DRINKS

№1: Remi Martin XO

gentleman's drinks

Rémy Martin XO has a global reputation for its rich flavors. It is composed of Eaux-de-vie coming exclusively from the highest-quality vineyards of Cognac, the Grande Champagne, and Petite Champagne. Such Eaux-de-vie offers an exceptional aging potential and is known as Cognac Fine Champagne. This is my favorite cognac! If you are the type who finds spirits burns your throat, go for the XO – it has a far smoother delivery than other variants – VSOP and VS.

Rémy Martin XO won a gold medal at the 2010 Spirits Business Cognac Masters (UK) and a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2014.

CHARACTER:

NOSE : Wide spectrum of aromas of late summer fruit, combined with rich floral notes of white flowers such as jasmine.

TASTE : The perfect expression of Fine Champagne opulence on the palate with mature flavors of juicy plums and candied oranges, with a hint of hazelnuts and cinnamon

BODY : Velvety, rich, and lingering.

№2:  Vodka Martini

gentleman's drinks

A vodka Martini is made by combining vodka, dry vermouth and ice in a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. The ingredients are chilled, either by stirring or shaking, then strained and served “straight up” (without ice) in a chilled cocktail glass.

When you say to the bartender “Shaken, not Stirred” you are simply describing your preference for the preparation. There are basically three forms of preparation, namely Dry Martini, Dirty Martini and Perfect Martini. A dry Martini is made with dry, white vermouth. Dirty Martini contains a splash of olive brine or olive juice and is typically garnished with an olive. Perfect Martini uses equal amounts of sweet and dry vermouth. James Bond famously drinks a “vodka Martini, shaken, not stirred” and since he is an epitome of being a gentleman, you should consider making this one of your favorite drinks as well.

№3: The Manhattan

gentleman's drinks

The Manhattan cocktail also known as the Classic Manhattan is one of the classic cocktails for true gentlemen. No wonder Sinatra singled this out as a favorite. Invented in the late 1800’s, this classic drink allows you to taste the full body of the liquor in its full glory. A dark, sweet cousin of the Martini, made with Rye Whisky or Bourbon, sweet Vermouth, bitters, and a maraschino cherry or lemon twist for garnish.

Preparation: Combine the rye or bourbon, vermouth, and bitters in a mixing glass or shaker with ice. Stir for a bit, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry or lemon twist.

№4:  Single Malt Scotch

glenfiddich

GLENFIDDICH 18 YEAR OLD is one of the world’s best-selling malts. Its famous triangular bottle is a fixture in practically every bar on the globe. Light and easy-drinking stuff loved by millions. To be a single malt scotch the whisky must have been distilled at a single distillery using a pot still distillation process and made from a mash of malted grain. There are a lot of well-known scotch whisky brands available in the market and your brand choice is simply a matter of your personal preference.

№5: The Old Fashioned

gentleman's drinks

The Old Fashioned is a cocktail made by muddling sugar with bitters, then adding alcohol, such as whiskey or brandy, and a twist of citrus rind. It is traditionally served in a short, round, 8–12 US fl oz (240–350 ml) tumbler-like glass, which is called an Old Fashioned glass, named after the drink.

Most commonly known these days as Mad Men’s Favorite Cocktail. Don Draper of Mad Men TV series made us very familiar with this particular cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 1 Sugar Cube
  • 3 Angostura Bitters
  • 1 L Club Soda
  • 2 oz. Rye Whiskey
  • 1 old-fashioned glass

№6: Jack and Coke

gentleman's drinks

This drink is so popular, it must be mentioned and one of the delicious gentleman’s drink you can find in this list. Jack and Coke (also referred to as JD and Coke, Jack Coke, or a Lemmy) is a cocktail made with Jack Daniel’s whiskey and Coca-Cola. This drink gives you the alcoholic kick without a lot of the whiskey flavor. The drink is usually served with ice in an old-fashioned glass or a Collins glass.

Commonly used ingredients:

  • 1 part Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey
  • 3-5 parts Coca-Cola (strength dependent)
  • Ice

Preparation: Fill a glass with ice. Pour in the Jack Daniel’s. Pour in the Coke. Stir lightly. Drink up!

gentleman's drinks

Brandy Alexander – this is my favorite creme liqueur based cocktailA Brandy Alexander is a brandy-based cocktail consisting of cognac and crème de cacao that became popular during the early 20th century. It is chocolatey, sweet, creamy and smooth. It is also reported as John Lennon’s favorite drink.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 oz brandy, 1 oz dark creme de cacao, 1 oz half-and-half (A simple mixture of milk and cream in equal parts) and 1/4 grated nutmeg

Preparation: In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the brandy, creme de cacao, and half-and-half. Shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass. Sprinkle with fresh ground nutmeg (it’ll have more flavor than ground nutmeg from a jar).

№8: Margarita

gentleman's drinks

A margarita is a cocktail consisting of tequila, triple sec and lime or lemon juice, often served with salt or sugar on the rim of the glass.

Ingredients: 2 oz Tequila, 1 oz Lime juice, 1 oz Cointreau
Preparation: Rub the rim of the glass with the lime slice to make the salt stick to it. Shake the other ingredients with ice, then carefully pour into the glass (taking care not to dislodge any salt). Garnish and serve over ice.
Standard garnish: Lime slice, Salt on the rim
Drinkware: Margarita glass

If you are a well-to-do gentleman and can afford to spend over a thousand dollars on a drink, you should try – BILLIONAIRES MARGARITA.

№9: Red Wine

gentleman's drinks

Every true gentleman should have a basic knowledge of wine (especially red wine) because not all occasion calls for hard drinks. Apart from being one of the top gentleman’s drinks in this list, red wine has a long list of health benefits. It lowers cholesterol, protects your heart and control blood sugar amongst many other benefits. The taste of red wine depends on the grape variety. The top red wine varietals that you are likely to encounter are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Shiraz, Sangiovese, Malbec, and Grenache.

№10: Champagne

gentleman's drinks

A bottle of champagne is the best drink for sharing special moments with friends and family. Jay-Z has listed Armand de Brignac Champagne as his favorite champagne. While James Bond loves his Martini, it will interest you to know that he loves Champagne as well and prefer Bollinger and Dom Perignon champagne. Since we are talking about the Gentleman’s Drinks, let’s talk about my favorite champagne – The Moet Ice Imperial. It is the world’s first champagne specifically created to be enjoyed on ice during the day when the weather is hot.

FINAL TIPS

Here is an important thing to note when next you are buying Cognac. There are three variants of Cognac you can buy – VS, VSOP and XO. These variants are sorted by quality grade.

  • VS (Very Special) or three stars – stored for at least two years in casks.
  • VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) or Reserve – stored for at least four years in casks.
  • XO (Extra Old) or Napoléon – previously, it was stored for at least six years in casks. In 2016, the minimum storage age of the youngest brandy used in an XO blend will be set to ten years.
