The Gentleman’s Staple Drinks | Cocktails, Whisky and Wine
Knowing about cocktails, whisky and wine is a true gentleman’s gift.
Tony: How do you prefer your Martini, Mr. Kobi?
Mr. Kobi: The Vesper – Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half of Lillet Blanc. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?
Tony: Alright Sir.
Mr. Kobi: Just a moment Tony…I would prefer Russian or Polish Vodka.
Tony: Certainly, Mr. Kobi !
And that was me describing my preference for the preparation of Vesper Martini to Mr. Tony, the mixologist at Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel in Lagos, Victoria Island the other day and he seemed very pleased with the idea of serving me the James Bond’s Vesper Martini – shaken not stirred!
Here at MR KOACHMAN we are all about being stylish, classy, confident and ultimately being a gentleman. I’m sure if I’m to ask you guys to mention one fictional character who is all of these things, I bet 99% of you are going to say, Bond…James Bond, a man of supreme gentlemanly finesse and an effortlessly suave persona who by the way loves his drinks and sometimes even creates them.
Today, this article has been inspired by Bond’s Lifestyle– his drinks and therefore as a classy gentleman, who loves alcoholic beverage you should love Cocktails, Whisky and Wine. Outside of alcoholic beverages, you should love good quality coffee. And if for any reason you find yourself thirsting for a cold beer, you may have a Heineken beer, yeah we saw Mr. Bond reach for a Heineken beer in the movies Goldfinger, Skyfall, and SPECTRE. But don’t get it twisted, even though James Bond ditched his Martinis for a beer, that never turned him into a beer drinker.

With that said, these are the three main gentleman’s staple drinks – Cocktail (The Martini), A nice whisky, and a bottle of good wine – Sparking wine isn’t a bad one. Now let’s talk about each one of them, shall we?
1. The Martini (Cocktail)
The Martini is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth (usually combined at a ratio of 2:1) and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist (depending on the drinker’s choice). Over the years, the Martini has become one of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages.
When you say to the bartender “Shaken, not Stirred” you are simply describing your preference for the preparation. Not everyone loves cocktail, but if you consider yourself a lover of cocktail, then you could adopt The Martini as your signature cocktail just as I have.
One more thing you need to know about the martini is that there are basically three forms of preparation, namely Dry Martini, Dirty Martini and Perfect Martini.
A dry Martini is made with dry, white vermouth. The dirty Martini contains a splash of olive brine or olive juice and is typically garnished with an olive. A perfect Martini uses equal amounts of sweet and dry vermouth
2. Whisky
Of course, we all know what Whisky is, but in case you do not know, whisky is a type of distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash and typically aged in wooden casks. Various grains are used for different varieties, including barley, corn, rye, and wheat.
There are basically two types of whiskies which differ in the base product, alcoholic content, and quality namely – Malt whisky – which is made primarily from malted barley and Grain whisky – which is made from any type of grain.
Malts and grains are combined in various ways to produce Single Malt whisky, Blended Malt whisky, Blended whisky, Cask strength and Single Cask.
Most whiskies are sold at an alcoholic strength of 40%, and in terms of age, you should know that whiskies do not mature in the bottle, only in the cask and this reflects how much the cask has interacted with the whisky, changing its chemical makeup and taste.
There are a lot of well-known whisky brands available in the market and your brand choice is simply a matter of your personal preference. We’ll talk about them in a later article.
Whisky on ice has always been a classic drink of the refined, so as a classy gentleman if you choose this as your preferred drink, you would always be perceived as a man of good taste and quality lifestyle. Macallan Single Malt Whisky is one of James Bond’s favorites.
3: Wine
Wine tastes great! but I’m sure you already know that. Whether it’s red wine, white wine, sparkling wine, fruit wine…you name them, they all taste great, but your choice of wine depends on your personal taste and preference. We won’t go into details on all types of wine here, as that’s not the focus of this article. But you should know that there is no better way to discover wine than by tasting everything, by so doing you can learn which wines best suit your palate. Here are a few of them to start with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Bordeaux, Chardonnay, Rosé Wine, Moscato, Malbec, Sparkling Wines etc.
Since we are talking about James Bond Lifestyle, it will interest you to know that Mr. Bond prefer Bollinger and Dom Perignon champagne which are both Sparkling Wines. In terms of Red wine he favours Chateau Mouton Rothschild and also expresses appreciation of South African Wine.
Sparkling wine has four levels of sweetness namely:
Brut: This is the most common sparkling wine made. The wine is dry, but there is a hint of sweetness in it. It contains less than 12 grams of residual sugar per liter. Champagne is the most common sparkler labeled Brut.
Extra-Brut: This is the driest kind of sparkling wine and contains less than 6 grams residual sugar per liter. An example is Champagne Pol Roger, Pure, Extra Brut.
Extra Dry: This type of sparkler is dry and sweeter than Brut wines, but not sugary sweet although it is not as dry as Brut or Extra-Brut. Prosecco is most often Extra Dry which can come in form of Spumante, Frizzante or Tranquillo.
Demi-sec: This is a sweet sparkling wine which is best enjoyed with dessert as there is a prevalent amount of noticeable sugar in it. About 32-50 grams residual sugar per liter.
I’m sure this will give you a basic idea on best choice to make when next you are ordering wine. Just read the label on the bottle to know the level of sweetness.
