New Year Goals | 3 New Year Resolutions You Must Make

By  |

The most common reason why people fail in their New Year Resolutions is as a result of setting themselves unrealistic goals.

List, New Year Resolution, Determination, Pen, Note Pad, Coffee

In almost all part of the world, every New Year’s Eve, people set aside few minutes or hours to look back to the past, reflecting on the achievements they want in the new year and then pen down their New Year Resolutions and resolve to follow the changes in the list.

Unfortunately, a lot of folks can’t differentiate between New Year Resolutions (or Goals) and a Desires (or Dreams) and this is the number 1 reason why many people set resolutions and don’t see much change after a year.

To make clear the difference for you guys: One is a wish (i.e. your Dreams and Desires), while the other requires your effort, planning, action, and determination to happen (i.e. your  New Year Resolutions).

When writing New Year’s resolution, people focus directly on changes and achievements they want in the New Year without laying the “foundation” that has to exist before those changes can take place.

They don’t make their new year resolutions specific, rather they are generic and not measurable. Here are some examples:

1. LOOSE A LOT OF WEIGHT
instead of
I will quit eating junk food. Start eating healthy, exercise 3 times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday), drink less alcohol and more water, quit smoking. Then loose 30kg by the end of 2017

2. BUY A BRAND NEW MERCEDES BENZ
instead of
I will increase my earnings, acquire more skills and experience, achieve a target income of 200,000 USD annually or earn 20,000 USD a month consistently from my job or business, so I can buy a brand new Mercedes Benz before the end of the year.

I’m sure you understand the above illustration. New Year Resolutions are changes you need, therefore you have to define small measurable steps on how you will achieve whatever changes you want in the New Year. This will serve as a guide as you refer to the list every now and then in the coming year.

A 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol involving 3,000 people showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, despite the fact that 52% of the study’s participants were confident of success at the beginning. Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as, a pound a week, instead of saying “lose weight”), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends – an excerpt from Wikipedia.

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones once said – “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.”

New Year Goals
So without interfering with your personal stuff in your New Year resolutions list, here are 3 more great resolutions that can help you achieve more in your personal life and business. I encourage you all to copy them out and add it to your existing list.

1. GET YOUR MIND IN SHAPE – READ, READ AND READ SOME MORE

New Year Goals

As much as everyone loves getting his/her body in shape, it’s also important to get the mind in shape. The best way to get the mind in shape is to always read.

The more that you read, the more things you will know and the more you learn, the more places you’ll go. Set the goal today to read at least 1 book every month, that is 12 books in a year for a start. If you can do more that’s fine.

2. BUILD POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS – CHOOSE THE PEOPLE YOU NETWORK AND RELATE WITH

New Year Goals

People Around You Affect Your Personal Success.
The Motivational speaker Jim Rohn said that “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”. Who you are with can elevate you and bring you down at the same time and influences the person you eventually become. What kind of person do you want to be, who are the top 5 people you spend most time with in your life at the moment, do they match what you want to be in the future?

Remember, if you are involved in any relationship, partnership or friendship which is not elevating you or bringing out the best in you, you are not really helping yourself and therefore can’t grow beyond where you are. So connect more with positive people, successful people, people who you look up to in business and in life and learn from them.

Some people are in careers they do not love.
