Why You Should Drink More Water | 3 Life-Changing Reasons

staying healthy

Some time ago, I was at the U.S. Embassy in my home country, the security check confiscated the 60 cl bottle of water I had with me and said it wasn’t allowed inside the consulate. I wasn’t happy.

Clearly, the security personnel didn’t understand how much water I consume every 3 hours – 0.6 liters of water to be precise. I’ve already finished my first bottle of the day around 6 am that morning. It was time for my second bottle, the time was 9 o’clock and I can’t afford to spend the next 3 hours without drinking another 0.6 liters of water. That’s going to make me miss my daily target of 3.6 liters of water (between 6 AM and 9 PM every day).

It’s been a daily routine for me since I made the New Life Resolution of Staying Healthy and beyond.

MY NEW LIFE RESOLUTION OF STAYING HEALTHY | DRINK MORE WATER

On the 1st of January, I made the following new life resolutions.

  1. Drink 3.6 litres of water daily i.e. 15 cups of water.
  2. Eat healthily. Stay clear of carbonated drinks (soft drinks), sugary drinks and junk food.
  3. Work out more often at the gym – 4 days a week.
  4. Then three (3) more life resolutions which I can’t start listing here – but you should really check them out here.

You know what…

I’ve been on this journey of staying healthy for a while and I can tell you for a fact that these habits have stuck with me and it’s been so beneficial. My energy levels are high, I feel better and healthier.

So I tell my clients the same thing, in addition to dressing well and doing well, you have to also live well. And that’s our focus here at MR KOACHMANTo inspire you to dress well, do well and live well.

Good health is fundamental to living well and so, today I’m going to show you how water can help you achieve your goal of staying healthy this year.

3 BENEFITS OF WATER (SUMMARIZED)

Drinking enough water helps prevent dehydration and can also help in the following ways

  • Will boost your immune system, prevent headaches, increase your energy levels, flush out toxins, keeps your skin clean and wrinkle-free and generally improve your skin complexion.
  • Helps you burn fat, promote weight loss, aids in digestion and helps prevent constipation.
  • Helps your body function properly thereby making you feel great, happy and in a good mood all the time.

HOW TO STAY SAFELY HYDRATED

1. KEEP TABLE WATER BOTTLE (OR TABLE WATER PACKS) WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES

If you work in an office environment, ensure you have table water packs in your office. If you are always on the move, keep a water bottle with you at all times.

Drink from it and refill it when it’s empty. Most importantly you don’t have to drink only when you are thirsty or dehydrated. Have a Plan! (see no 2 below).

2. HAVE A PLAN FOR DAILY CONSUMPTION OF WATER.

Have a daily plan of drinking water at regular intervals. The amount of water for each person is very individual, though the Institute of Medicine (IOM) suggests that a recommended daily intake for the average adult male is 3.7 litres (15 cups) and for the average adult female is 2.7 litres (11 cups).

Overall listen to what your body needs, but don’t over drink! Personally, I choose to stick to my own plan of 3.6 litres daily excluding the water derived from my food intake. So I drink 0.6 litres every 3 hours between 6 AM and 9 PM daily.

3. SET AN ALARM TO REMIND YOURSELF TO DRINK MORE WATER

Set an alarm clock on your computer, phone or your clock, to remind you to drink water at certain times during the day.

To help you decide on which time of the day you can follow the recommended 15 cups for male and 11 cups for female, then work out an hourly time schedule or any time schedule that is fine by you and set your alarm.

Once your alarm goes off, grab your cup or your table water bottle and start drinking.

HOW MUCH WATER IS TOO MUCH?

Not drinking enough water is bad and can cause dehydration and other symptoms such as fatigue and dizziness. On the other hand, excessive drinking of water (especially within a short period of time) can lead to over dehydration and can cause a serious condition called water intoxication. This happens when you drink more water than your kidneys can get rid of via urine and water starts to collect in the body.

In summary, in order to avoid water intoxication, it’s advisable that you should NEVER drink more than (0.8–1.0 litres) of water per hour, on average. You stand less risk if you drink the same amount of water over a longer period of time.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Yes, you need to do this for yourself. As you’ve read today, you need water to stay healthy and function properly. Therefore, you should endeavour to drink more water. When your body is functioning at its best, you will feel great and be happy!

Overall, you should make the new life resolution of drinking at least 3 litres of water daily across 12 to 16 hours as we’ve explained above. If you still have a doubt about this, start by trying this for the next 3 months and track your progress. At the end of 3 months evaluate yourself. If you’ve consistently stuck with this habit for 90 days you should see positive results.

Bottom Line: This requires dedicated effort. Sometimes you could find yourself forgetting to drink because of a busy schedule or generally finding it difficult to stick to the plan all the time. I suggest you try having plenty of fresh fruits that are water-rich such as cucumber (96% water) and watermelon (93% water). Eating these fruits daily also contribute to your daily water intake.

That’s it, for now, guys! As always, thanks for stopping by. Continue to Do Well, Live Well and Dress Really Well.
