How To Match A Watch With Your Outfit
How To Match A Watch With Your Outfit
My friend and former colleague Josh (nicknamed Steve Josh) had his wedding last weekend here in Lagos, Nigeria and I was his wedding stylist. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend the wedding ‘cos I had to leave town that morning for an important pre-arranged engagement. I had called him a day before to apologize and asked him to send me his wedding pictures when they were out.
I woke up this morning and started with my morning routine by checking my email. Then, I saw an email from Josh with the mail subject “THANKS KOBI – MY WEDDING PICTURES”.
With excitement, I opened the mail –
Behold the dapperness of the groom – my friend – Steve Josh!
He wore a midnight blue tuxedo jacket which was just the perfect fit, his trouser – a black trouser, well cut, with length hanging slightly above-the-ankle and the leg opening at the bottom was slim – 14.5 inches in circumference. It was the perfect break – No Break. His shoe – a black patent leather pumps with a silk bow on the top.
I really did a good job styling this sharp gentleman – we’ve made the perfect wedding attire for him.
I was still going through his pictures when I suddenly noticed something odd in one of his pictures. “Wow…Oh No!!!”, I screamed.
Josh had committed the Most Unforgivable Fashion Sin as far as the world of Men’s Fashion is concerned.
My friend, Josh wore a sports watch with a rubber strap with his Tuxedo. To be precise he wore a Casio digital sports watch.
That was the FASHION SIN!!! And the sad part is, I am equality guilty of this sin.
I didn’t do my best in helping him avoid this unpardonable fashion sin. I should have included a perfect dress watch when I was working on his wedding style plan, but I omitted this in my list.
I’ve committed the sin of omission while Josh is guilty of the sin of commission.
In order to teach gentlemen how to avoid this sin – I decided to share this story with the entire league of gentlemen across the world, starting with the loyal readers of MR KOACHMAN Style Gospel and Teachings.

How To Choose The Right Watch For Your Outfit
1. DRESS WATCH
A dress watch is a simple mechanical watch with either manual or automatic wound and it usually comes in with a leather band. A classic formal dress watch only shows hours, minutes, seconds and maybe the date. Having a nice dress watch in your collection is essential, especially if you wear dress shirts often.

- Black tie & white tie
- Business formal/Semi Formal
- Business casual
- Smart casual/Casual wear
DON’T WEAR WITH:
- Sport wear
2. DIVING WATCH OR SPORT CASUAL WATCH
A diving watch, also commonly referred to as a diver’s watch is a sports watch designed for sporting events such as underwater diving, racing and busy sporting moments. Popular among scuba drivers, they were usually equipped with large readable dials and are water resistant to at least 330ft. They feature a unidirectional rotating bezel that scuba divers can use to remind them of their remaining air supply.

- Sport wear
DON’T WEAR WITH:
- Black tie & white tie
3. CHRONOGRAPH WATCH
A chronograph watch (also called a Chrono watch) is a type of watch that can be used as a stopwatch as well as a display watch. It has an independent sweep second hand. Generally, it comes with 2-3 sub dials – 1st sub-dial which records elapsed minutes and is graded in segments of 30; a 2nd sub-dial which records elapsed hours and is graded in segments of 12. The 3rd sub-dial (optional) which may show elapsed seconds, or may count fractions of a second. It also comes with about 2 to 3 buttons which can be used to start, stop or reset the chronograph function.
This watch can be used by just anyone for timing your activities such as at the gym when timing your reps or when running and generally when the calculation of time is required, hence the reason why it’s not usually recommended for black tie, white tie, and business formal wears.

FINAL THOUGHTS
That’s all, for now, gents. Now you’ve learnt how to match a watch with your outfit, one last rule you should observe when matching a watch with your outfit is:
Ensure your watch is not too loose or too tight. If it’s too loose it can disappear down your wrist and if it’s too tight, it can be quite uncomfortable to wear. Ask your watch seller to make necessary adjustments for you before you leave that watch shop, alright? Cool.
Ultimately, the main consideration when wearing a wrist watch is your comfort, fit, style and outfit. Take note of this as you accessorize.
Do you have any further thoughts you would like to share with us with respect to how to match a watch or wear a watch? Feel free to share.
