The Watch Guide- 7 Wrist Watch Rules For Every Modern Gentleman
A classic nice wristwatch worn on your dominant wrist never goes out of style…Kobi O. Mbagwu
“I can give my wristwatch to my children and they can give it to one of their children, It’s something that works in perpetuity since watches aren’t something that needs to be changed constantly “- Stephen Pulvirent
There is no doubt that a wristwatch is an essential timepiece for every man.
Tom Ford once said “Dressing Well is a Form of Good Manners”, and I personally think it is bad manners to put on an outfit without complementing it with the essential accessories required, one of which is a nice classy wristwatch.
At least 90% of all men wear a wristwatch mainly to keep track of time. Only a very few know that a wristwatch is more than just for keeping time, that even more it can be used to make a fashion statement.
Only these few know a good wristwatch when they see one. They know how to buy them, how to wear them to match their outfit, their style of dressing, the occasion, the season, the weather etc. These few are called the Dapper Men, The Stylish Gents, or generally known to many as True Gentlemen.
For these True Gentlemen, no matter how stylish an outfit may seem, it’s not complete until you match it with the right accessories that go with the dressing.

Now, let’s go back in time, with a little history on Wrist Watches and we will come back to the watch rules later on :
HISTORY OF WRIST WATCH
Some people say the world’s first wristwatch was created by Abraham-Louis Breguet for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, in 1810. By the mid-nineteenth century, most watchmakers produced a range of wristwatches, often marketed as bracelets, for women.
From the beginning, wristwatches were almost exclusively worn by women, while men used pocket-watches up until the early 20th century. These early models were essentially standard pocket watches fitted to a leather strap, but by the early 20th century, manufacturers began producing purpose-built wristwatches.
ROLEX changed everything, and without their innovation, we would probably still be rocking pocket-watches strapped in long chain or leather.
The history of Rolex is inextricably linked to the visionary spirit of Hans Wilsdorf, its founder. In 1905, at the age of 24, Hans Wilsdorf founded a company in London specializing in the distribution of timepieces. He began to dream of a watch worn on the wrist.
Wristwatches were not very precise at the time, but Hans Wilsdorf foresaw that they could become not only elegant but also reliable. To convince the public of the reliability of his resolutely innovative timepieces, he equipped them with small, very precise movements manufactured by a Swiss watchmaking company in Bienne.
Fast forward years later, His Rolex wristwatch of 1910 became the first such watch to receive certification as a chronometer in Switzerland. It went on to win an award in 1914 from Kew Observatory in Greenwich.
Now, enough of the stories, Let us go straight to the 7 Style Rules for wearing your wristwatch.
7 WRIST WATCH RULES FOR EVERY MODERN GENTLEMAN
1. A Modern Gentleman should have a minimum of 3 or 4 wrist watches
These are – A brown leather, a black leather, and a silver chain wristwatch. In case you so desire, add a nice luxury wristwatch if you can afford it without breaking the bank.
2. Buy only authentic designers wrist watch
You should only buy from designer brands whose core business is in the manufacturing and selling of quality wrist watches. To buttress my point, don’t buy a DELL Wrist Watch [not sure that even exists, but the point is DELL is a computer technology company and their core business isn’t Wristwatches].
Who knows? Maybe someday they would introduce smartwatches.
3. You should ALWAYS wear your wristwatch on your dominant wrist and never on your non-dominant wrist.
I know traditionally it’s been said that right-handed individuals should wear their watches on their left wrist. Left-handed individuals should wear their watches on their right wrist. I say to you If you are right-handed, you should wear it on your right hand. If you are left-handed, you should wear it on your left wrist.
Wearing it on your dominant wrist shows a sign of confidence, power, and authority. Most importantly it shows you are not going to wear your powerful wristwatch on your weaker (non-dominant) wrist.
4. Always buy the original.
Learn how to know the original wristwatch – Youtube has a whole lot of videos on how to spot the fake or counterfeit of a designers wristwatch. When you’ve mastered the secret of spotting the fake one, AVOID it by all means.
If you have found a watch that passes this test, however, the cost is slightly cheaper than the one found on the designer’s website, by all means, buy it. They are called Good Replicas. Watch fanatics know exactly what I’m talking about.
5. Never assume that because Good Quality Replica wrist watches are made and sold slightly cheaper than the real deal, that it must be fake, counterfeit or of poor quality.
This is a wrong assumption. There are good quality replicas and there are gray market retailers of watches.
Most good replica wristwatches are produced in far east countries such as in Japan where labor is cheaper but are still made to Swiss standards and are perfectly legal. However, not all designer brands have good replicas. Some brands that have good replicas include Omegas, Panerai, Breitling, and Cartier etc.
Gray market watches are authentic watches sold outside of an authorized dealer. Some of these watches are sold by an authorized dealer to other dealers. Most are still in brand new condition while few might not be brand new but they are not fake wrist watches.
6. When trying to buy a wrist watch, it’s best NOT to purchase through mail order.
Make out time and visit a reputable watch shop to select the one you want. This is so you can confirm everything is exactly how you want it before paying.
Also, if you want to guarantee that you are buying original don’t buy online on an eCommerce website. Buy straight from company’s website or go to the dealer shop.
7. You can wear your wristwatch with a bracelet, combining it with different types and colors to match your outfit.
This is a trend very popular amongst the modern stylish gentlemen these days. Make sure the wrist bracelet enhances your watch when trying to pull this off. Some types of bracelets you could use are metal bracelets, nautical trend bracelets, Beaded Bracelets, Leather & Woven Bracelets.

Hello Tori, yeah I know it’s been the norm for a lot of people for so long whereby the custom is to wear it on your left wrist if you’re right-handed and to wear it on your right if you’re left-handed.
And it’s not like it’s bad. But like I said, the modern gentleman won’t have to follow these traditional rules. Wearing your wrist watch on your dominant wrist which is right wrist for most people signifies you being in control and in authority.

Hi Ezenwa, I appreciate your comment, however the wrist watches you’ve mentioned here are luxury expensive wrist watches which are not easily affordable by an everyday classy man while I have only mentioned a few luxury wrist watches in this post some of which actually fall into the same category of the brands you’ve mentioned in terms of cost. Vacheron Constantin for e.g have some wrist watches of 40k usd while some others of above 400k usd.
This particular post wasn’t to address list of Top Luxury Wrist Watches but to Guide Gentlemen on The Rules of Wearing Wrist Watches. The traditional rule as to which wrist to wear a wrist watch, had always been the less dominant wrist and not really “the left wrist” as many would think. Reason being that wearing your wrist watch in your least dominant hand would ease your movement and help protect the watch from scratch. But in this article, we’ve said the opposite which is that the modern gentleman should wear his wrist watch in his most dominant wrist (the reasons have been explained already in the article).

Thank you for the knowledge. I am among those using their wrist watches on their weak hand! I’ve repented. Thanks
