Beard Breakage & Split Ends: How To Get Rid Of Them

By  |

Beard breakage and split ends can be very annoying! I know, I can relate. It is quite frustrating to see your beard hair fall off or cling to your beard brush during your daily beard routine.

I personally know how disappointing it can be combing your beard right out of the shower and noticing some of your beard hairs swirling down the drain or clumps of hair fall out at once, not just extra strands.

This can be very discouraging, especially if you’ve been working hard to grow a full, luxurious beard for a while.

But I urge you to not give up or opt for a clean shave…

Keep calm ‘cos we’ve got you covered – read on!

beard breakage & Split ends

Split ends are a thorn in one’s beard/flesh, and there are a couple of reasons for getting beard breakage and split ends.

Preventing this requires a bit of patience, but as a bearded man, you are most likely a patient man.

So where do split ends come from and how do you prevent it from happening? After confirming that your beard breakage is not a health issue, then there is a possibility that it is another kind of issue. Thankfully, not too serious compared to health issues.

All throughout the month of November, it’s been a #NoShaveNovember season. If you have been following us on social media, we have been sharing a lot of beard posts (tips, guides and inspiration) to encourage men to grow their beards. And you know I like to always share these enlightening information with my devoted readers – especially the aspiring beard growers.

And of course, we got a lot of messages from many bearded gents about growing and caring for their beard.

A few of them also shared their many challenges of which I personally shared tips and solutions to their beard problem. One of the challenges common to a lot of them was beard breakage and split ends.

So that is why we are gathered here today to discuss this common beard issue and tackle it with one mind, of course not without the blessings from our Beard masters – the league of extraordinary bearded gentlemen.

Before we start – HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE BEARD BREAKAGE or SPLIT ENDS?

Some hair loss, including facial hair loss, is totally normal.

So hold on a second and let’s be sure…

  • Did you check if your beard is unusually rough?
  • Does your beard look unkempt, such that no matter how you brush and treat it, your beard still looks like it needs to be tamed and they keep falling off?
  • Does your facial hair fall off or cling to your beard brush during your daily beard routine?

If you answered “YES” to any of these questions above, then you have some real beard issues to deal with, let’s move on…

5 REASONS YOU’RE GETTING BEARD BREAKAGE & SPLIT ENDS

#1. Not Using The Right Shampoo

Many Shampoos contain bad chemicals that cause a lot of damages to your beard. They usually contain ingredients like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) which is used as a detergent in most shampoos. Its main purpose is to completely strip out any sort of sebum oils and moisture from your beard.

So there is a possibility that you aren’t receiving any benefits using these types of shampoo on your beard. A better recommendation is natural beard oils that do not have Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).

#2. Blow Drying Your Beard

This is very BAD! If you’re guilty of this you have to stop. Blow drying your hair dries off the entire shaft of your hair follicles. This, in turn, makes your beard dry, which causes… guess?

Beard breakage, yes you’re right!

Blowdrying is very harmful to your beard, it also increases the chances of breaking your beard follicles.

#3. Over-washing and Aggressive Washing

Washing your beard too frequently or aggressively is a very quick and easy way to damage your beard hairs prematurely. The goal of washing your beard is to keep it clean and healthy. Washing it every day or roughly will put unnecessary wear on your beard hairs. It will also wash away valuable natural oils that help keep your hair healthy and strong.

Be gentle when washing your beard, gently massage your face and work the shampoo through the beard hair from base to tip.

#4. Over Combing or Brushing

Another beard mistake that can lead to the loss of excess beard hairs is over combing or brushing your beard. You shouldn’t comb or brush more than 3-4 times a day. If you comb your beard more than the 4 times, you need to stop! You are weakening healthy hairs and pulling them loose.

#5. Playing With It

man stroking his beard

This is one of the bad beard habits that is ruining your beard. I have mentioned this many times, I know it is a difficult habit to break as “great ideas come from a beard stroke”. But still, it is bad and ruins the growth of your beard.

Tugging, pulling, stroking, or running your fingers through it too frequently adds extra stress and wear on the hair. This causes it to loosen up and fall out prematurely. Sad right?

Fixes: How To Prevent Beard Breakage

To avoid excess beard hair loss, follow these tips below and avoid the bad habits mentioned above.

  • Wash your beard 1-3 times a week and dry with a towel.
  • When combing your beard, start at the ends and brush down. Then gradually work your way up towards the face so you don’t get snagged on a knot and yank a chunk of hair out.
  • For those with longer beards like me, I always use a good beard comb that has wide space between the teeth. This is to avoid tugging and twisting your beard.
  • The type of comb to use is a fine-toothed saw-cut wooden comb. Sawcut wooden combs are made in a way that the teeth are incredibly smooth. Plastic combs will tear your entire beard follicle shaft with each stroke.
  • Apply quality natural beard oil that strengthens hair and encourage growth. They keep your beard hair healthy and strong, which will encourage growth and stop breakage.
