The Only 3 Watches You Really Need In Your Collection

By  |

Who says you can’t have as many watches as you want? Of course, you can, but the truth is – you actually need only 3. And today, we’ve mapped out the three essential watches every must MUST have. So sit tight, relax, and read on to know the only three essential watches you really need in your collection.

three essential watches You Really Need

A Gentleman needs a watch for every occasion. A great percentage of men only own one wristwatch they wear at all times and for every occasion. While I’ve met some men who say, they wouldn’t buy a wristwatch until they can “afford it”, so they move around with their wrist bare.

My response usually would be – “You don’t have to go for a very expensive piece, go for a good quality wristwatch (even if it’s not a Luxury Watch Brand) – just pick a good quality one your finances allow.”
And I can tell you that there are quality watches that are not from popular brands but they serve the purpose – plus they last longer.

I know sometimes we can be indecisive on which watch to go for and some of us would buy any type that we come across as long as the design looks nice.

What happens if it’s a classy and nice-looking  Casio G-SHOCK Watch and you buy it. Would it be okay to wear it with your suits, casual wear, and native attires – Your guess is as good as mine, NO!

So, gentlemen, the quickest way to decide on which watch to get is to ask yourself one key question – Would this wristwatch fit every occasion?

Having the right watch for every occasion makes you dress the part wherever life takes you.

How many watches do you think every man should own?
Honestly, as much as you can afford – especially if you are a Watch Aficionado. But realistically, there are only three (3) Essential Watches You Really Need for a start.

Today, I’ve compiled the list of three essential watches you really need in your collection. Go ahead and read to see if you already have a watch that fits your lifestyle and every occasion.

The Only 3 Essential Watches You Really Need In Your Collection

#1. EveryDay Watch

That’s No 1. An everyday watch. A wristwatch that is appropriate for almost any occasion and can be worn at all times. This should be a watch that is very comfortable and can stand the test of time. A Chronograph watch is a type of watch which is very appropriate as your everyday watch.

Also known as a Chrono watch, they can be worn by just anyone for timing your activities such as at the gym when timing your reps or when running and generally when the calculation of time is required, hence the reason why it’s not usually recommended for black tie, white tie, and formal wears. When picking this watch note that:

  • You can wear this with Business casual, Smart casual, Traditional Attire, Casual, or sportswear. You can also wear this with a Business Suit (especially if it comes with leather straps).
  • Go for leather, rubber, or stainless steel watch because it is very light which is more comfortable to wear every day.
  • You can’t wear it to a Black tie/white tie or Business formal event.
  • Pair this watch type with other stylish accessories that you would like to wear, such as bracelets and rings. But keep it simple, a simple bracelet (metal, leather or nautical trend bracelets is okay), and a simple fashion ring (No Skulls please).

#2. Outdoor Watch

This is a type of watch you would want to wear outdoors for activities that involve lots of physical movements such as sporting events e.g. underwater diving, racing, and busy sporting moments. This is what a Sports watch or Diver watch was designed for.

Sports watches are usually equipped with large readable dials, compasses, and altimeters and are water-resistant to at least 330ft – which makes them perfect for diving or swimming. They have built-in features like timers (or chronographs if analog). The strap, case, and watch dial are made with protective materials that keep the glass from shattering. When picking an outdoor watch, please take note these few tips:

  • You can wear it with a Business Casual, Smart casual, casual or sportswear. Do NOT wear sports watch (with timers) with your business suits or office suits. Do not wear with your native attires.
  • If you’re the outdoorsy type, get an outdoor watch that is tailored towards the sport with good features like water resistance, a lightweight build, interchangeable straps, shock resistance, etc.
  • It should have a rubber, leather, or metal band for comfort. If you’re outdoors, for example, a beach, then something with a rubber or silicone strap will best fit the bill.
  • You can’t wear this to a black-tie or with business formal attire.
  • Pair this watch type with other stylish accessories that you would like to wear, such as bracelets and rings.

#3. Dress Watch

Getting dressed up for a formal occasion – a formal wedding, an award night ceremony, evening cocktail party, etc? A dressy watch will set you apart from the crowd.

A dress watch is a simple mechanical watch with either manual or automatic wound and it usually comes in with a leather band. These statement wrist watches are usually a little bit more expensive than the chronograph or dive watch. It is your most prized possession reserved only special occasions.
If you really want to elevate your black-tie look (or formal attire look), you’ll need a classic wristwatch that is simple enough to complement your outfit (rather than overpower it) and thin enough to fit into your jacket sleeve cuff.

When picking out your dress watch, keep in mind the following tips:

  • For a formal occasion, a leather (black) or metal band that only shows hours, minutes, seconds, and date is the most appropriate watch.
  • Wear a dress watch to a Black tie/white tie, a Business formal (including Business Suits/Office Suits), or Business/smart casual event. You can also wear it with your Native Traditional Attire.
  • You should NEVER wear a rubber watch to a formal occasion, that is a serious fashion sin.

FINAL THOUGHT

There you have it, the three essential watches you really need. I hope this article has addressed any style questions you may have with respect to the watch you should buy.

If you’re just building your watch collection, I’d advise that you get a wristwatch that you can afford. This way, you can understand your preferences, likes, and dislikes before going for a more expensive piece.
