Fragrance Guide | How To Correctly Apply Your Cologne

By  |

The way you smell is one of the best ways to make a great first impression. Here is how to correctly apply your cologne…

Fragrance

Picture this scenario:

You are at an event, networking, and mingling like you always do and then you walk up to someone to introduce yourself. You immediately realize your mistake when your nostrils and throat detect the smell of too strong perfume. You’re in trouble. You can’t walk away, well….not immediately…that would be impolite. You are forced to take an endurance test which you must pass or you risk losing the friendship/business partnership/opportunity which could really be useful to you.

As you would have guessed by now…yeah this happened to me, yesterday at an event and I’m sure many of us have experienced this at one point or another. I eventually had to make an excuse that I had to get my business card from my car, I actually was… but my reason was far from innocent.

Fragrance

We all know that too much fragrance is a turnoff, but the problem is that some people either don’t have a very good sense of smell or they’ve become desensitized to the fragrance they wear every day, hence the problem.

Whilst the rules for smelling great aren’t quite as complex as those for getting the “black tie” dress code right, they’re still worth knowing. So here’s a helpful guide to effectively wearing cologne.

By following this guide you can rest assured that your fragrance will always remain a weapon of mass seduction rather than one of destruction.

HOW MUCH COLOGNE SHOULD YOU APPLY & WHERE SHOULD YOU APPLY IT?

APPLY YOUR COLOGNE TO YOUR PULSE POINTS

Your cologne should be applied to pulse points. This is the areas of your body that produce the most body heat. Body heat activates the cologne increasing the strength of the smell and making it last as long as possible. Putting your cologne on your clothes won’t give it the same effect.

Here are the pulse points, choose two or three pulse points and you are good to go. Remember, Keep it subtle.

  1. THE INSIDE OF YOUR WRISTS
    Spray on both wrists
  2. BEHIND YOUR EARS
Spray onto your palms and wipe it behind your ears.
  3. YOUR CHEST
    This invariable scents your shirt.
  4. YOUR NECK/THE BASE OF YOUR THROAT
Dab some cologne to the base of your throat and the back of the neck.
  5. CROOK OF YOUR ARM AND KNEE
  6. HOLLOW OF YOUR COLLARBONE
  7. YOUR BICEPS

HOW TO APPLY YOUR COLOGNE

fragrance guide

The first thing you must know is that: If you are sweating profusely or you have body odor, never apply cologne to cover it up, it’s going to do more harm than good. Here are other tips on how best to apply your cologne.

a. Take a shower first to cleanse your skin. Never spray your cologne on a dirty or unclean skin.

b. Spray from about 6 inches away from your body. The idea is not to smell like you’ve just bathe with the cologne. Hence, do not spray directly on your skin and also spray lightly.

c. Don’t mix your cologne with other scents. A lot of people are fond of combining scents, most times the scents do not go well together. Even when you have more than one and you want to interchange, stick to only one per outing or per day.

d. Don’t reapply your cologne too often. This is also very common. You store the bottle in your bag, carrying it everywhere you go and spraying it many times throughout the day. You might think the perfume you’ve sprayed earlier has completely worn off, however other people could still smell it even when you don’t. To avoid this as much as you can.

e. When you spray, don’t rub it in. Allow it to dry on your skin.

OTHER SUGGESTIONS ON WEARING COLOGNE

As against having one signature scent, I would recommend having a few different colognes, at least 2-3 which you can rotate often and by so doing people won’t be able to predict what you will be smelling like next. Be spontaneous rather than predictable because A predictable man is a boring man. A boring man…well that’s not classy. Yeah! ladies, go on…keep nodding.

FINAL THOUGHTS

When applying any fragrance please consider that there are several factors which can affect the natural smell of your skin and, in turn, the way a scent smells on you. For instance, your mood, stress level, age, body chemistry, diet, and current medications may all alter the scents you wear. Similarly, factor such as dry or oily skin can even affect the amount of time a fragrance will last after being applied.

Most importantly, avoid wearing too much perfume. It’s better you smell the real you than drench yourself with intoxicating aromas. Also, remember the secret – Apply sparingly and in all the right places.

Please feel free to drop your comments below, I’d love to hear from anyone who knows more about where and how to use a cologne and anyone else who has experienced problems with perfumes or fragrances. How did you cope? Have you ever had to speak to a friend or colleague about their perfume being too strong? Do let me know.

Wow, Mr. Kobi….. You just woooowed me, lol. I must say, you preach the unchanging fashion gospel. I just stumbled on your blog, in fact the first article i read confirmed you as a man of content. Majority of the facts contained in your blog are things I have known for years.

Hence, my amazement at the utter failure of Nigerian men fashion wise. Even those that should be in the know – celebrities for instance, have not fared well in this regard coupled with the ignorance of our womenfolk who celebrate mediocrity in our men.

The fashion field in Nigeria would be more inviting and interesting if all men would adhere to the rules and insights you churn out.

This is the best fashion blog in Nigeria at the moment, this I say without bias nor sentiments. It is evident Mr. Kobi is a man given to in-depth research and serious study.

Keep up the good work and may God bless the work of your hands.

    Cheers!

I also appreciate your complement “best fashion blog” in Nigeria, lol, preach on, preach on bro!! We are here for a cause..and we will get there someday. You can also share majority of my posts cos you can’t estimate how far this style gospel will spread. We will keep on the good work till every Nigerian Man dresses the right way for every occasion and be an example to the rest of the world.

Thanks once again, and also feel free to reach me. I am open to engage anyone for the purpose of this passion.
