How To Wear and Style A Check Blazer Like A Pro | 5 Ways
A check blazer is a stylish jacket that every man should have in his wardrobe. Check this guide on how to wear a check blazer like a pro.
Gentlemen,
Your wardrobe isn’t complete if you do not have a blazer in your wardrobe, and if you do have, it is even worse to not know how to rock them effortlessly and stylishly.
A check blazer is one type of blazers that most gentlemen don’t know how to rock stylishly. We receive style questions from readers via our ASK MR KOACHMAN platform on Which clothes to pair with their Check Blazers.
During our Wardrobe Audit sessions with clients, a few times we’ve noticed that most of them do have one or two check blazers in their wardrobe that they hardly wear. And when we ask to find out why it’s all still brand new with the little-embroidered label still attached to the jacket’s sleeve, the answer is always the same – “It looked nice when I first got it and later realized that I don’t know how or what to pair it with”
So first of all, let me make this clear…
A check blazer is a classy style of blazers that would make you look smart any day, any time (if worn correctly). Simply put, this jacket type exudes class and maturity, therefore it is a staple item in every gentleman’s wardrobe.
It is a break from the norm. It’s a way to spice up both your smart casual and business casual look for extra sophistication and razzle-dazzle.
They come in various check patterns like Tartan, tweed, Prince-of-Wales, window-pane, and many more.
So I’m sure the question in your mind right now is: How Do I Wear A Check Blazer Like A Pro?
Okay, now that you have asked, here are the rules on how to wear a check blazer like a pro.
How to Wear a Check Blazer Like a Pro| 5 Rules
#1. Wear With More Patterns
When it comes to wearing checks there are no specific rules. But if you know what you are doing or if you’re doubtful, I’d advise that you stick to neutrals or the same colour for each piece.
However, if you are a risk taker, pair your check blazer as part of a three-piece suit or with a slick pair of pants in mismatched checks for a modern twist on the pantsuit. To complete the look, add a tie, a shirt and a dress shoe. Wear checks of varying scale and subtlety.
#2. Wear With an Ultra-Masculine Piece
Contradict the style and offset the country-casual tailored overtones of your blazer by layering it over something completely different.
You can mix and match the colour, texture, and size of your checks. Pair it with red chinos for a dapper casual look with a dress shirt and casual slim tie thrown in for good measure. Add the right accessories and a double monk strap or single monk strap shoe to keep things elevated, or sneakers for a more low-key look.
#3. Wear With Jeans
This is a simple formula, wear it with straight-leg jeans, Plain T-shirt or printed, checked blazer and a pair of boots or suede double monks.
This is a cool and versatile look that will take you from work to evenings out with co-workers or a date.
#4. Breaking up a Suit
For those of you who wish to dress stylishly to work without wearing a business suit, consider dressing down a business formal look by breaking up your suit look.
In this case, a check blazer, dress shirt and dress pants combination would be the ideal way to go. Check Blazers with a shirt, a grey or navy blue pants, a tie and well-polished dress shoes for a formal occasion is a perfect combination for the office.
For more casual look, just switch the shirt and tie for a nice polo or a T-shirt and the dress shoes for a pair of loafers or sneakers.
#5. Wear With Khaki Trousers/Chinos
A classic combination to try with your check blazer would be with khaki trousers. A check blazer and beige trousers is a very versatile look that speaks class and sophistication. You can wear this for a formal occasion (e.g. a wedding) as a guest but switch to a double-breasted check blazer and a single-breasted for a more sophisticated look to the occasion.
Wear a simple tie, a white shirt, and monk-strap shoes for a dressy look, and for a relaxed look, wear a crew neck T-shirt or sweater with a pair of loafers.
Final Thoughts
As you have learned from this piece today there are so many ways you can own this look. So take advantage of that now. Don’t be afraid to break up your suit look substituting a check blazer in place of your suit jacket or sports coat.
Be free to take risks for the sake of style and be creative!
Now you know how to wear a check blazer like a pro, go for it!
