How To Dress Stylishly in Your 20s

By  |

When dressing in your 20s, it’s okay to experiment. But how do you dress stylishly in your 20s without looking like a high schooler? Here’s everything you need to know about how men should dress stylishly in their twenties.

Dress stylishly

Is it a normal thing to see an older man dress ten or twenty years younger than his age?

I thought I had seen it all but imagine my shock when I saw a man in his mid 20s walk into a bar [where I was hanging out with friends last Friday night] wearing a pair of skinny jeans, a Jamaican printed net tank top “Singlet” and a red crocodile shaped rubber sandals popularly known as Crocs.

And to make it worse, his hair was tinted a light gold. He was no different from my 7-year-old nephew trying to impress me with his little boy swag.

I was taken aback and wondered why a grown man like him would want to dress like a little boy and come to a place filled with Gentlemen and ladies of high class, dressed like that.

Everyone in the bar was dressed stylishly but the man-child stood out like a little fish in a room full of sharks. Oh well, how sad!

And I thought to myself, with how exposed and digitalized as we claim to be, and with fashion blogs like ours – MRKOACHMAN.COM, some of us still don’t know how to use the internet to our advantage.

I also realized that It’s not really enough to tell men WHAT and WHAT NOT to wear, it is also important to let men know how to dress appropriately for their age – and in this case, how to dress stylishly in your 20s.

Being in your 20s is a very exciting and adventurous age, you want to have all the fun and enjoy your youthfulness before reality catches up with you- or maybe face the real responsibilities of being an adult. As much as you want to have fun, experiment and follow the latest fashion trends, you shouldn’t dress like a slob or a like a seven-year-old.

How do you dress stylishly in your 20s as you transition from being a student to a young professional?

At this age, you wonder who you are and what you want to do with your life. It can be difficult to figure out what you want in life and how you want to dress stylishly, especially in this fashion conscious world.

HOW TO DRESS STYLISHLY  IN YOUR 20s | 6 Powerful Rules

1. Invest in Formal Wear!

When you are just starting in your 20s, it’s best to go for at least two fitted suits (not your father’s hand me downs) that you can wear for weddings, interviews, work and any other occasion you might need.

The most versatile color you can go for is a plain, deep navy blue and charcoal gray suit. Make sure to get it properly tailored to fit you – that way you know it’ll fit just right every time you slip it on.

2. Get Good Shoes!

Don’t be like the man wearing Crocs at the bar!

It’s often said that shoes are the first thing a person notices about your outfit, either consciously or subconsciously. We know shoes are not very cheap, you can invest in two quality pairs of smart shoes, one black, and one dark brown.

For formal occasions, invest in a double monk strap or Derby style while for casual occasions, you can have at least 3 types of shoes which MUST include Converse/Sneakers, Boat shoes, and Loafers.

3. Get a Good a Tailor and a Barber!

Never, ever underestimate the power of an expertly fitted clothing and a good haircut.

No FUBU long tops, no ill-fitted suits, no baggy trousers etc. All your clothing has to be smart with you and well-fitted.

Befriend your tailor or barber, have a good relationship with them and they will keep you looking good and well-groomed for years to come. Note that a relatively inexpensive suit or any piece of clothing can look like it’s from the best designers if it’s fitted right!

4. Dress According To The Income You Earn

Hmm, we already know that everything is packaging and you want to dress stylishly to fit the image you want to portray, but at whose expense?

Your pocket of course!

Conversely, dressing beyond your budget is going overboard with trying to “package well”, it will only make you bankrupt. You don’t have to spend too much money to look good. It is advisable and possible to dress stylishly within your budget and save for more important things since you’re still in your 20s with little responsibility.

5. Be a Dedicated Follower of Fashion – Only to a Point. Always remember, Fashion fades, style is eternal.

In your 20s, it is easy to get away with most things while you’re trying to establish your identity and be open to the notion that buying certain types of clothes will make you cooler or more attractive.

At this age, most of you are more interested in following fashion trends and will do anything to collect designer clothes that you will not wear when it goes out of fashion.

This is all part of growing up, but don’t drag yourself further into debt for designer labels, however vital or “cool” you think they are. Remember, not every trend should be followed! Fashion Passes; Style Remains!

6. Have Some Fun and Experiment!

Remember we talked about experimenting earlier, well it’s no joke.

You can try out different patterns and more trend-led items that can be added to your core wardrobe as the seasons change like the side-striped trousers or Dad denim pants. You can play with colors and try out new styles that will work for you, try not to overdo it so you won’t look like a Clown.
