Boxers or Briefs. Which Men’s Underwear Style Is Best For You?
Your wardrobe is not complete without a great underwear. The challenge is there are different underwear styles to choose from. Boxers, Briefs or Boxer Briefs. Which Men’s Underwear Is Best For You? Let’s find out…
About 2 months ago, I received an email from Mr. Nwegbo who is an avid reader of MR KOACHMAN. He requested that I should write an article on Boxers and Briefs; I promised to do so and so I queued up the request. But honestly, the topic wasn’t high on our priority list when compared to other requests we received through ASK MR KOACHMAN which were mainly on Men’s Style Tips, How-To Guide and Beard Grooming Topics (I must say it seems every guy really wants to learn how to grow and care for their beards).
Weeks passed, months passed and the Boxers vs Briefs topic just remained on the bottom of our “Must-Write Style Topic” list.
Well…not until last weekend, when another frequent blog reader by name Mr. George sent in his Style Question which was similar to the topic Mr. Nwegbo had earlier requested for 2 months ago: Boxers or Briefs. Which is the best option?
This time around, I wasn’t going to let it go. Even though we had scheduled a different topic for this week, I had to do justice to this topic as quickly as possible to liberate men from further committing unpardonable style sins and bad style habits by wearing the wrong underwear style.
So today, I will be explaining the key differences between these three underwear styles, but first, you must know that none of the underwear style is better than the other; The choice of which one to buy or wear, entirely depends on your need, preference and the type of pants or shorts you are wearing it with.
Now let’s delve into the topic of the day …
BOXERS, BRIEFS OR BOXER BRIEFS? Which Men’s Underwear Style Is Best For You?
Having good underwear is essential and a good place to start when you are building your wardrobe. But you don’t have to worry about choosing between boxers or briefs anymore. Instead, you should consider the following:
It’s all about your preference.
- Do you prefer “support”? Go for Briefs. Though it’s not an underwear you can wear lounging about around your home.
- Do you prefer loose-fitting underwear plus thigh coverage? Go for Boxers. But note they provide almost no support.
- Do you prefer the best of both worlds? Go for Boxer briefs. They are similar to boxer shorts, but tighter-fitting like briefs.
PS: While Briefs provide comfort, they do NOT cover the inner part of the thigh. Boxer Briefs does.
•COMFORT & APPEARANCE•
Every man deserves a great underwear that is comfortable and looks great. I see so many people — even high-level professionals wear underwear with SUPERMAN, SPIDER-MAN or Carton Character prints. This doesn’t look sexy at all and to be honest, if your girlfriend sees you daily in these underwear styles and doesn’t complain, both of you really need to attend some STYLE CLASSES.
Also, define what comfort means to you – If you prefer “support” you should go for briefs or boxer briefs. If you prefer your “boys” to hang out and be free under your clothing, then boxers are the best option for you.
Overall, you should choose an underwear style that looks great, matured and comfortable.
•FIT & FUNCTIONALITY•
It’s very important to wear underwear that is your exact fit. Consider the shape and cut of the underwear as well, as this determines the level of comfort you’ll have when wearing one. So, choose the right size, always!
A size above your normal size will always drop below your bum, thereby exposing your buttocks which isn’t classy.
Wearing a size too small can cause irritation against your skin. It can also cause bulging of your private part; your “boys” would be visible under your clothing, which isn’t classy as well. Keep them in its place.
Consider the fabric when choosing your underwear. An underwear made with breathable fabric is preferred. Go for a 100% cotton underwear – the most breathable fabric. They feel good on your skin and is the healthiest option for you.
Rayon or artificial silk, nylon and other non-breathable and synthetic fabrics can trap heat and moisture making your groin area an optimal breeding ground for bacteria. This can lead to maceration (the softening and whitening of skin that is kept constantly wet), skin damage as well as infection.
•FUNCTIONALITY & TYPE OF CLOTHING YOU ARE WEARING•
If you are wearing a pant trouser or dress pant for instance suit a brief would be more comfortable than boxers as the excess fabric in boxers would cause discomfort in a fitted trouser.
But if the dress pant fabric is very light and in a plain color, then you won’t want your briefs line showing on your trouser. Go for boxers briefs if this is a concern.
- When wearing men’s shorts, a boxers or boxer briefs can be worn.
- When wearing athletic or gym shorts which are usually loosely fitted, you would prefer an underwear that keeps your “boys” in its place. The boxer briefs or briefs should be worn in this case.
- When wearing jeans, a Boxers, Boxer Briefs or Briefs can work.
- A boxer brief can also be worn in any of the scenarios when you prefer a longer length, support, and comfort.
If your pants or shorts are not loosely fitted and they have zippers, consider wearing an underwear that provides support for your private part to avoid the zipper hooking your “boys”. If you’ve experienced this before, you can attest to the fact that it can be quite painful.
My take: A good quality boxer-brief is a preferred choice for me and for a whole lot of men I believe because it provides both comfort and still not as short as the briefs. Anyone who doesn’t like excess fabric or short briefs would find this one the most comfortable option.
The bottom line is that you should choose whichever one is comfortable and fits your lifestyle. But avoid wearing anyone that makes you look indecently dressed when you wear it.
Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. Which of the underwear styles is best for you?
I look forward to hearing from you…until next time, continue to do well, live well and dress very well. Be Classy, always!
