Unfortunately, acne is something that a lot of us have to deal with – usually at puberty and adolescent age while a few others still struggle with breakouts even after they’ve transitioned into adulthood.
No matter our confidence levels, and no matter the blemish — whether it’s a single pimple or a chronic breakout — acne is always debilitating.
It makes you self-conscious as it draws attention to your face, this can be very uncomfortable to deal with.
Here’s the good news, by understanding the different types of acne, what causes them and how to treat them, you can learn to control or prevent them altogether.
With that in mind, here is an acne treatment guide on how to get rid of them for good… good luck!
What Is Acne?
To put it simply, acne occurs when your pores get clogged. This usually forms when your body sheds dead skin cells which is at a rate of around 40,000 a day. Then they get lodged inside the pores, mixing with sebum (an oily and slightly waxy substance produced on the face and scalp), dirt and bacteria to create a very nasty mixture.
Acne may also appear on your neck if the skin cells are clogged, and this could be a result of not washing your neck regularly especially after sweating. If you use/apply skincare or grooming products on your face, neck, your beard (for those who use beard oil), they may block the oil on your skin and if you don’t wash regularly, it could lead to acne.
Acne Treatment Guide: What Causes Acne?
Generally, acne is commonly caused by genetics, oil, bacteria, and hormonal shifts.
Acne also occurs when the hair follicles on your face or neck get clogged and this leads to the formation of red bumps around the region.
Some people believe that shaving causes acne, however, shaving itself does not cause acne. But if you have acne already, the region could be irritated when shaving especially if you are not using the right shaving product.
Here are other causes listed below:
- Some skin care products have ingredients that are known to clog pores on your face and body.
- Not frequently changing your pillowcases
- Eating lots of sugary or processed food can also be a cause
- Not showering after a workout
- Stress is one of the causes of acne because it leads to hormonal shifts and an increase in sebum production that can block pores.
- Wearing clothes that are restrictive or don’t help ventilate the body.
If you keep your face and neck clean at all times and use the right products that are perfect for your skin type, then you are less likely to have Acne.
Levels Of Acne
There are different levels of acne, so not all acne is the same. Acne can come in forms like clogged pores or blackheads to painful, deep nodulocystic acne. Some acne has the tendency to cause permanent scarring.
-
Mild Acne
The first level is the mild acne which is anything from a small pimple to a small cluster of them. These can usually be treated at home with a proper skin care regimen. Although they are not as extreme as other forms of acne, their cause can be harder to pinpoint because so many things can cause mild breakouts like hormones, diet, stress, etc.
-
Moderate Acne
The second level of acne is a breakout around a dozen comedones, inflamed bumps, or minor lesions. This usually takes weeks or even months to clear up, but with the right topical and oral solution – as prescribed by a doctor, it can be treated. This is mostly caused by a significant hormonal shift, stress, bacterial spread, etc. Mild scarring may also occur.
-
Severe Acne
The third and last level is inflammation or spreading breakout of over 100 pustules, papules, whiteheads or blackheads is considered severe. I advise that you see a dermatologist for a perfect diagnosis. A strict regimen to pinpoint the cause and reduce the threat of permanent scarring or spreading will be formatted for you.
Acne Treatment Guide: How To Get Rid Of Acne
#1. Prevention
The best solution is prevention, as they always say, “prevention is better than cure”. So to achieve this, you need to eat healthy, natural foods, get enough rest and drink lots of water. Stop the habit of touching your face with dirty hands – wash your hands regularly and change your pillowcases regularly.
#2. Acne Treatments
Consult a dermatologist for acne treatments if you have moderate or severe cases of acne. The dermatologist can prescribe treatments like; lasers to remove dead cells and oil buildup, or cortisone injections where the doctor injects a steroid in the affected area to quickly deflate the mass and reduce skin damage.
#3. Medication
Use oral medications or topical creams especially if you have severe or persistent cases of acne. Oral medications include antibiotics that work from within to destroy bacteria all over the body. Go for topical creams like hydrocortisone creams, retinol, which are available over the counter. Apply some before bed to reduce and prevent acne.
#4. Skincare
Use skincare products with salicylic acid cleanser dissolve any dead skin cells and keep your pores unclogged. Use exfoliant or a gentle physical scrub after using the cleanser, along with a non-comedogenic moisturizer to moisturize your face.
#5. Lifestyle Changes
Your daily lifestyle also plays a role here, how? Personal hygiene is the most proactive way to have healthy skin. Have a healthy lifestyle by getting enough sleep, stay hydrated, avoid processed foods and too much sugar, cut back on alcohol and caffeine intake, and shower at least twice a day as well as immediately after a workout. Also, minimize stress in your life.
