7 Classic Boots Every Man Should Own | What Styles You Should Buy
These are the 7 boots every man should own, including the classy Chelsea boots, casual work boots, versatile brogue boots etc.
I’ve got this good friend of mine who loves wearing his well-tailored suits with boots instead of dress shoes.
Now I’m sure you are imagining this right now (see pix below)
Nah! That’s not what I meant …
Actually, I was not referring to heavy work boots, ranger boots, or cow boy boots. On the contrary, I meant good classy Chelsea boots and other dress boots that were always perfect for his suit look (see pix below and tell me if this doesn’t look great).
Now, there is nothing wrong with the other boot styles I mentioned, however, from my experience dealing with a lot of male clients while working on their style upgrades, I’ve realized that each time I mentioned the word “boot” or I suggested including the footwear in their Style Plan – most of the time, what comes to their mind are – HEAVY FOOT WEARS that are clearly not appropriate for certain occasions.

While many men concern themselves with picking out the right shoes for the situations that they find themselves in most, boots are often a great replacement for regular shoes in many cases, and they are a trendy way to set yourself apart from the rest.
Just like their smaller counterpart, you can find boots in a variety of styles, for everyone from the most outspoken to the most withdrawn among us.
If you’re just wondering where to start, we’ve compiled a list of the top 7 boots every man should own. You should consider them to be ‘must-have’ items for your wardrobe.
Top 7 Boots Every Man Should Own
#1. Special Occasion Dress Boots
When you’re planning a night out on the town, a good pair of dress boots will be your first choice. While you might not consider dress boots to be a category, there is an entire collection of boots that don’t fit into any particular type of style, but they are built to be shown off.
A great example of dress boots would be wingtip boots with a slightly more easy going appearance than the rugged work boots described below. These are a staple for any man’s closet.
#2. The Rugged Boot
The rugged boot is what most men think of when the word ‘boot’ is brought up, and that’s because the rugged boot is the epitome of an old-school work boot, with steel toes, incredibly rigid construction, and potentially a longer shelf life than the wearer.
Today, rugged boots are a must for many types of work, and one good pair of these boots can last you for most of your life if you take care of them.

#3. Suede Desert Boots
Desert boots have long been a staple in men’s wardrobe, and still exude a hint of old-school masculinity due to their military pedigree.
Today, the desert boot is much more fashionable than in years past, with a popular option being the suede desert boot.
While it doesn’t have the same watertight functionality of the original desert boots (you have to treat them with a weatherproof coating for that), they can power through most types of weather and come out looking great on the other side.
#4. Everyday Casual Work Boots
Just like the office, work boots are also adopting a casual new look as well, and just like the business casual dress, your casual work boots should still be able to hold their own on the job site or during a particularly busy weekend.
The difference here is that your work boots will be just as easy to wear with a pair of jeans for a laid back night out after you wear them all day. They should be comfortable, functional, and look good enough for most events that don’t require choosing a dressier option.

#5. Adventurous Hiking Boots
One of the keys to being a well-dressed man is being able to roll with the punches and have an outfit that’s suitable for all occasions. If you’re going on a long walk or hike, the last thing that you want is to wear a pair of stiff work boots.
Hiking boots are built to be comfortable during long periods on your feet, and they can handle ongoing movement while remaining supportive. Make sure that you look for hiking boots that are waterproof too, just in case you run into a stream or river on your hike.
#6. Classy Chelsea Boots
The Chelsea boots have been around since 1851, and no, they don’t come from the neighborhood in New York City with the same name. Chelsea boots were originally designed for royalty and were said to be a regular piece of footwear for Queen Victoria.
Although they may have been invented over 150 years ago, the Chelsea boot was popularized in the 1960s, and the look remains consistent to this day. This boot will give your outfit a clean cut and stylish, yet comfortable look.
If you are buying a Chelsea boot for work or to be paired with your corporate or business attire (e.g. office suits), make sure to get one in brown or black color. While there are plenty of places that you can skew more modern styles of Chelsea boot, the Chelsea boot looks great when worn in the traditional style.
#7. Brogue Boots
Rounding up our list is a much less traditional option in boot form: the brogue boot. While the brogue has been a staple of menswear for decades, the brogue boot is a relatively new addition to most closets.
That isn’t to say that they aren’t a versatile investment, as the brogue looks just as good in boot form, and it can be worn with more outfits due to its hybrid nature. When you’re picking out outfits, it’s also a great boot to highlight, whereas some of the others in our list are considered more of a subtle accessory.

FINAL THOUGHTS
There you have it – The 7 boots every man should own. However, you don’t need to have every type of boot to have a well-rounded wardrobe, but it does help to have a few boots that you can go to for most situations. In summary, we all want the perfect boots for our feet and the right occasion.
Having a good casual work boot, a nice dress boot, and a functional boot that you can throw on for any situation is a great place to get started.
