4 Creative Ways to Reuse and Restyle Your Old Clothes

By  |

Being resourceful is a gentlemanly trait, and there’s no better than to reuse your old clothes and give them new life.

 4 creative ways

Everyone has old clothes lying around that they don’t use anymore. Whether they’re too big, too small, or out of style, many people leave various clothing brands hidden in the back of the closet to avoid throwing them out. To recycle your old clothes, check out these creative ways to reuse your old clothing.

1. TEE INTO A TANK

For men who work out, pit stains are a fact of life. If you have a favorite shirt that can’t be worn because of the yellowing underneath the sleeves, transform the shirt into a workout tank and get rid of the stains completely.
To transform it into a tank, simply cut the sleeves off about an inch inward from the seams. You can finish your tanks here, or you can fold the shoulder seams together and lay the shirt flat in order to cut away the front of the neck. Now, your favorite shirt is still wearable for the gym, the beach, or the pool—all without the embarrassing stains.

2. SWEATER INTO A BEANIE

Old Christmas sweaters are some of the least worn sweaters in your closet. Since these sweaters have fitted, elastic bottoms, you can easily turn them into something you wear every day. Reuse your old unworn sweaters by transforming them into a beanie.

You can take any sweater with a fitted bottom and cut a horizontal line all the way across it, leaving a foot of material from the bottom of the sweater. Cut this circle of cloth open along one seam to make one long piece of rectangular cloth. Then, wrap the bottom of the sweater fabric with the elastic around your head so that it overlaps slightly and cut off the excess fabric.

Once you have the trimmed fabric, fold your smaller rectangle into thirds and cut the top of the rectangle into the round shape of a beanie. Lay your cloth down with the side you want to show facing up, fold it in half, and glue the two edges together with a glue gum. Now, line up the top arches of the beanie and glue those edges together as well. Once all of the glue is dry, flip the beanie inside out and you’ve got a brand new hat.

You can make beanies out of any stretchy fabric, in any color or size. Using your old, unworn clothes, start a new collection or give them away as personalized gifts.

3. SHIRT INTO A TIE

As you get older, ties become an essential part of many everyday outfits. Whether you need a nice tie for work or for formal events, you can customize your own. It’s a simple process that ensures your clothes will live on in another form. All you need is a shirt partially made of polyester for the main tie, a different colored shirt for lining fabric, and a small piece of twill tape.

To begin, you can find a tie pattern online, or take a tie you already own and lay it over your main shirt to draw the pattern on the shirt. Cut out the pattern for the tie and then do the same with the pattern for the tie lining. The lining should be slightly thinner than the tie pattern.

Once you have both tie and lining, lay the lining along the back side of the tie, and fold the longer edges of the tie around it from all sides, then sew the folded edges shut. After everything is sewn together, fold the right and left sides of the tie, so they slightly overlap on the back of the fabric. Sew this overlap shut along the entire length of the tie. All that’s left now is the tie keeper. Cut a three inch strip out of the twill tape and attach it lengthwise about five inches from the bottom of the tie.

Once you’ve created a few neckties, you can wear them out to your next formal event.

4. DRESS SHIRT CUFF INTO A COIN POUCH

Trying to fit coins and change into your wallet can be a hassle. Create a new coin pouch with the cuff of an old long-sleeve button up.

Cut off the cuff of one of your dress shirts and fold it in half. The side with the buttonhole should be long enough to allow you to button the flap. Sew the sides and bottom of the cuff closed to create the pouch. Once you’ve finished sewing, you can use the pouch to hold change or sunglasses.

FINAL THOUGHTS

You don’t have to leave your old clothes lying around. If you’re sick and tired of a shirt, sweater, or pair of pants, turn them into something new! Being resourceful is a gentlemanly trait, and there’s no better than to reuse your old clothes and give them new life.
