THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY (TGIF)

This article applies to anyone who works in a corporate establishment that observes a strict formal dress code every day of the week except on Fridays.

Thank God It’s Friday!!

I’ve finally gotten the opportunity to rock my newly designed native wear attire to work this Friday morning. I can’t count the number of compliments I’ve received so far since I walked into the office.

You know what? Let’s count together! 🙂

First, the security man at the gate who looked at me and said: “Morning Oga, you look fine Sir” his face brimming with a smile.

Next… the young receptionist who was seated at the front desk – “Wow, Mr. Kobi! you look really sharp this morning”, she said with a shyly smile.

Moving on… my good friend and female colleague flirted with me in Ibo language saying “Nwoke mara mma, nna idi uto, imaka zi! Ke ebe idu m aga ta?” I laughed!

And then, in between my early morning meetings, a bunch of other friends and colleagues tried to stop me for a head-to-toe assessment in a bid to shower more compliments. But I wasn’t so much in the mood for that to be honest, as I needed to get most of my To-Do List sorted out this morning, so I can focus on writing this post during my lunch break. Well, it’s my lunch break and here I am writing this Friday Style Inspiration Series article to inspire you guys.

I guess I can say, my encounter with all these beautiful people this morning serves as the inspiration for this piece.

Friday Style Inspiration: What Not To Wear To Work On Fridays

After my earlier post on the Kobi Koachman Guide to Native wears (see it here), I was having a conversation with my very good friend Mr. Ibk, a stylish gentleman who just like me, loves the good things of life.

We sat in the lobby of an exotic hotel one weekend, enjoying some creme liqueur-based cocktail Brandy Alexander to be specific, and discussing various topics ranging from national news, style and fashion, and business.

As a banker, Mr. Ibk shared with me some of the rules that applied to Casual Fridays in his workplace. He said most banks are moving away from the Western dress codes and transitioning to Native wear dress codes for Fridays with the aim of promoting African culture.

He mentioned some of the fashion faux pax he sees many bankers make when rocking their native wear to work and other inappropriate casual clothing styles they wear all in a bid to observe the so-called “Casual Friday” dress code.

The irony of this is that the fashion blunder these men commit can only be noticed by a few people who really pay attention to details. In most cases, it’s the Human Resource department since they set the dress code guidelines.

In other words, these errors could be seen as “okay” outside the workplace, but not suitable in the work environment on Dress Down Fridays most especially.

Different companies would have different dress codes as well as etiquette. However, today I’m going to summarize the dress and etiquette rules that apply to this industry. If this pertains to you, please check out these rules below and make every effort to adhere to them.

RULES FOR EVERY CORPORATE GENT – WHAT NOT TO WEAR ON FRIDAYS

1. Do not wear any form of Slippers or Sandals to work no matter how cool your dress is or how expensive your sandal or slip-on is.

The only exception is when you are wearing a native wear attire.

2. Never wear ripped jeans or tee shirts to work on Friday.

This outfit style is meant for a casual outing, after work hours such as a visit to the bar, club or any other form of casual visit or meeting.

3. Never wear face caps or round neck t-shirts alone to work on Friday if you work in this industry sector.

If you must wear a round neck t-shirt you should pair it with a nice Blazer jacket and Chinos.

4. Never remove your shoes in the office or move around barefooted or only your socks.

I see this a lot, especially among IT professionals. If your shoe is too tight or hurts you when you wear it for long, please buy a new one. Shop for a new one.

5. Never overdress to work on Friday.

Wearing an Agbada or Dashiki Native wear to a social formal outing on a weekend or even on a Friday is okay, as long as the dress code is allowed.

But wearing the same outfit on a Friday to work is not appropriate. It isn’t a work-appropriate native attire. It is synonymous with wearing a Tuxedo to the office any day of the week, which is unacceptable. This dressing is considered a little bit too much for the office environment. Wear only simple native wear attires and avoid these ones.
