Difference between Eau De Parfum (EDP) and Eau De Toilette (EDT)

By  |

For those of you who are often confused when it comes to choosing between Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette, this is for you.

Eau De Parfum

I once sold an eau de toilette perfume to a certain lady, Natasha, over a decade ago and she returned it the next day, can you guess why? Because her roommate told her EDP was better than EDT. Now that was the number 1 reason why I stopped dealing with Women’s Fashion and focused on Men’s Fashion.

Just yesterday, Tomi, a friend of mine told me it was her Husband’s birthday [today] and when I asked what she was going to get for him, she said “NOTHING SPECIAL”. But I convinced her to get him a nice and affordable cologne as a birthday gift [she initially didn’t want to, because she had already planned to give him the usual Conventional Gift which I am against].

So I suggested that she should get him a Gucci Guilty Pour Homme Eau De Toilette Spray for Men, told her how the perfume was among the Top 10 Most Seductive Scents for Men, and went on to tell her how it also won The 2012 FiFi Awards – Men’s Luxe. She eventually purchased the perfume.
Eau De Parfum
Guess what happened, I arrived my office this morning and on my desk was the same perfume I sold to Tomi with a note,

“Hi Kobi, kindly exchange this EDT cologne for any nice EDP Scent you have, I heard Eau De Parfum is better than Eau De Toilette. Thanks. Tomi”

Oh not again! They said History does not repeat itself, but as Mark Twain remarked, it does occasionally rhyme. Well today, I agree with Mr. Twain. Fifteen years (15) later, history appears to have repeated itself, but this time around it’s my dear friend Tomi.

Now, Tomi, this is my response to your note, I hope you’ll read this post.

Eau De Parfum

Dear Tomi,

I know a lot of people are usually confused about the differences between these two most common varieties of perfume. So I’ll like to take a few minutes of your time to explain to you the difference between EDT and EDP.

First of all, none is better than the other as they both can give you the amazing aroma you want. The decision to choose one over the other entirely depends on your mood, the season and most importantly your personal preference.

The main difference between EDP and EDT lies in the concentration of essential oils i.e. the fragrance oil used. The higher the concentrates, the higher the intensity of the fragrance and the more the longevity of the scent and usually the more expensive the scent.

  • EDP contains between 15 to 20% concentrates while EDT contains between 5 – 15% concentrates.
  • EDT is a lighter, more refreshing scent when compared to EDP which is a stronger scent. This makes the EDT most suited for warmer climates.
  • Additionally, because EDT contains less aromatic essence than the more heavily concentrated EDP, an EDT is frequently less expensive.

To explain it in another way, perfumes have a combination of 3 notes – top note (the first scent released), middle note (heart note) and then base notes.

  • For EDP, after the top note fades away, the heart note is released and remain heavy, so it tends to last long.
  • For the EDT, the top note is first released and then it evaporates more quickly than the EDP.

Overall they are both nice, it just depends on your preference and type of smell that suits an individual.

Now let me address the question

DOES EAU DE PARFUM LAST LONGER THAN EAU DE TOILETTE?

There is this myth that EDP is better and last longer when compared to EDT. But the truth is this entirely depends on the levels of aromatic compounds used when making the perfume. A perfume house can decide to assign a high level of aromatic compound to their EDT fragrances, hence you might find an EDT that is much stronger and lasts longer than an EDP.

In addition, the longevity of a scent also depends on the skin type of the person using it. Generally, fragrance tend to last longer on people with oily skin than those with dry skin. This is because the oily skin has more natural moisture and is able to hold in the scent. So you could find an EDT lasting longer on an individual with oily skin than an EDP when used on a dry skin.

I hope this explains the difference and has helped clear up some of the questions you might have. Let me know your thoughts, which one would you now go for?

Here are the other different fragrance strengths below:

  • Eau Fraiche is the lightest version of the fragrance. It lasts up to an hour.
  • Eau de Cologne lasts for two hours and is mostly composed of 2-4% perfume oils in alcohol and water.
  • Eau de Toilette is stronger than the other two mentioned above, which is 5-15% strength. It lasts for about three hours.
  •  Perfume and Parfum are the two strongest versions. The Perfume has about 15-20% pure perfume essence. It lasts up to four to eight hours. While the Parfum is the most expensive and strongest version of a fragrance. It has about 20-30% pure perfume essence and has an oily feel because of its purity. It can last for an entire day.

Lol. Not at all Sylvia, women do not have issues. But when it comes to shopping, men do make up their mind faster than women. And women also can change their mind faster just by someone convincing them a piece of clothing doesn’t look too great. Men are generally more easy going.

Kobi, that means before a person choose the kind of spray he/she wants they ought to know the oily or moisture content of their skin.
Can you set example of the concentrates difference in the EDP sprays you cited as examples

Hi Julian, yeah it is important to note if you have a dry or oily skin when choosing the particular scent you want. Unfortunately, the perfume brands do not put the concentrates level on the perfume bottles, but they do state two things that will guide you which are 1. The notes (middle, base and top) as well as if it’s EDP or EDT. These two alone should help you decide. In general if you have a dry skin and you are particular about longevity, then you should stick to EDP. I hope this addresses your question.
