BEARD GOSPEL: THE LAW ABOUT WEARING BEARDS

By  |

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, brethren, do not judge a man by the size of his wallet, but by the beard on his face” – The Beard Gospel

1 How good and pleasant it is
when God’s people live together in unity!

It is like precious oil poured on the head,
    running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe – Psalm 133 1-2

This Beard Gospel message includes what the Bible has to say about beards, list some men of the Bible who had beards and provide you with reasons why Christians should grow beards.

The beard is a part of God’s design right from creation. God has naturally given men and women glorious distinctions. He created man with beards and the woman without beards. Most men in the bible had beards, even Jesus.

MEN IN THE BIBLE WHO HAD BEARDS

According to the Holy Scripture, God’s people grew full beards to show their devotion to their creator.  And King David, the man after God’s own heart, also wore a beard. Let’s go to the scriptures …

Turn your Bible to the book of 1 Samuel 21: 12 – 13

I’ll read:

David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of Achish king of Gath. So he pretended to be insane in their presence; and while he was in their hands he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and he let his saliva run down into his beard.1 Samuel 21:12-13

The scripture didn’t say, he let his saliva run down his well-shaved cheeks. No! He let his saliva run down into his beard.

This next scripture we’ll read is a prophecy from the book of Isaiah that reveals that Christ certainly grew a full beard.

If it was a short one, it would be difficult to grab it let alone pull it. But as the scripture implied his beard was long enough to be “plucked”.

The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not disobedient Nor did I turn back. I gave my back to those who strike me, and my cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover my face from humiliation and spitting – Isaiah 50: 5-6

TO SHAVE A MAN’S BEARD WAS TO HUMILIATE HIM

At some point in the Bible, after the King of the Ammonites died, King David then sent a delegation to make a condolence visit to his son Hanun. But Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard and sent them away.

When King David heard this…he commanded his people “Remain in Jericho until your beards have grown and then come back!”, 2 Samuel 10: 4-5

Let’s also look at Ezra 9:3 and Leviticus 19: 27 to show you that it’s shameful to shave a man’s beard and that the bible forbids trimming a beard.

When I heard this, I tore my tunic and cloak, pulled hair from my head and beard and sat down appalled – Ezra 9:3

Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or trim your beard – Leviticus 19:27

As Christians, we are meant to emulate Jesus in every way we could and we all know that Jesus’ beard is one of the most famous beards ever and should be an inspiration for all of us who grow beards.

None of us could ever die and rise again after 3 days; none of us can actually perform the miracles he performed in his time, none of us can heal the sick, raise the dead or turn water into wine -but one way we can live like Jesus is by growing a full luxurious beard, just as he did. 🙂

CONCLUSION OF THE BEARD GOSPEL

So there you have it. As you’ve seen today, the bible does place great emphasis on beards.

For those who are genetically able, I highly recommend growing the full beard. The truth is your gene primarily determines how thick, fuller and luxurious your beards can be. If God has blessed you with good “beard genes”, do not disappoint him. Let us all embrace our God-given gifts and grow a beard to the glory of God. After all, every good and perfect gift is from him.

I’ll leave you with a quote from Charles Haddon Spurgeon who is considered by many to be one of the greatest preachers of the ages and also known as “Prince of Preachers”.

“Growing a beard ‘is a habit most natural, scriptural, manly, and beneficial.”-Charles Spurgeon

Men of God, grow your beards!

Thank you all for stopping by. Have a great day.

Powerful, I love this piece sir. I am inspired, but my challenge is that I can’t endure the pain when the hair stays up to 6 days on my face. Sometime it’s like having a thousand needle pressing against my face. Thank you
