Some years back, precisely the evening of 25th December 2009, I witnessed a young man propose to his girlfriend in a Beer Joint/Suya Spot somewhere in Mende, Maryland, Lagos State. Some of you who are familiar with this spot would understand why it’s such a “big deal” for me.
Here is how it all happened….
It was about 8 pm on that Friday, I was out with 2 of my friends who had just come back from the UK for Christmas. They wanted to have the best Suya in Lagos State, Nigeria so I took them to this place. So we ordered Suya with cold bottles of local white wine.
As we were enjoying the combo of spicy shish kebab, gizzard, shaki [also known as tripe] and skewered meat with our special white wine. I noticed thick fumes emanating from the Suya spot close to where our table was situated in the open space, so I started choking and coughing ‘cos of the fumes I was inhaling. While I was still coughing, I suddenly heard people screaming and clapping from the table not too far from ours. As I turned around, I saw a young man, on one knee [in the midst of the whirling smokes infusing the air] with a tiny black box that had a ring in it.
I guess my reaction was the same as the lady’s…we were both greatly astonished and had our mouths wide open.
The young man started to tear up and said “Hey baby, I want to wake up with you every morning, I just want to grow old with you…blah blah blah” (everyone except me and my friends, screamed “Aww!” in excitement) and then the young man held the lady’s hand, called her name and said “Will you Marry Me?”
I’m sure the lady’s heart must have skipped maybe 10 beats when the guy said that, ‘cos mine did but maybe not for same reason as the lady…or maybe it was.
She stood still…faking that cry and for another 3 minutes, she couldn’t give the guy a response, [why should she, for God’s sake this guy is proposing in a “Beer Joint”… yeah, I get…ladies want dramatic proposal but this particular drama was a flop!!]. After the guy asked for about three more times, the lady finally said “YES I WILL” and he slipped the ring on her finger and she gave him a bear hug, still with shock and disappointment writing all over her face.
I turned to my friends and started asking these rhetorical questions…WHAT was this guy doing in a beer/suya joint with an engagement ring in his pocket? WHY was he even on a serious date with his girlfriend in a beer joint …a place you wind down for the evening with your friends. WHY would he propose even when he saw smokes from the Suya Spot blowing right into his lady’s face. What a Gentleman!!
Thinking about it now, I guess the young man didn’t even know any classy hangout spot suitable for a date or proposal, it would have been better if he had done it at a polling center on Election day like some love-crazed dude did while votes were being counted sometime last year in Nigeria.
This brings me to the topic of the day, if you live in Lagos State and you are looking for a nice hangout spot on the Island, this article if for you. For guys in MAINLAND (LAGOS STATE), you could find your own hangout spots here,
If you are looking for a place to hang out on the Island or a place to have a serious date with your girlfriend, or you want to propose to your fiancé in Lagos State, Nigeria (Lekki & Victoria Island axis) this is for you. Enjoy!
